Coin Collecting Gains Momentum

The recent drop in precious metal prices lately does not seem to have many investors or collectors concerned.  The truth is, when studied over a significant amount of time, the values of precious metals can always be counted on to hold steady or gradually appreciate.  Since many people place their investment dollars into gold, silver, and platinum for the long-term returns, a drop in price here or there is not terribly concerning.

What is notable, however, is the fact that coin collecting seems to be gaining momentum, even through the dip in precious metals prices.  Of course, collecting coins has long been a popular hobby.  Many people can be found each night with a soft cloth and a magnifying glass, poring over their pocket change for error coins and rare coins.  It even happens on very rare occasions that someone will stumble upon such a rare coin that it ends up being worth thousands of dollars, but the chances of that are slim to none.

So, why the renewed interest in collecting rare coins?  Well, the smart answer is that coin collections have proven to hold their value just as tenaciously as bars of precious metals.  If you’re lucky enough to possess coins from rare mintage years, then you are well aware that the coins can be worth well over their face value.  When coins such as these are grouped into a collection, the collection takes on a life of its own.

Outside of the coins that have been minted for circulation, collectors also like to add gold and silver bullion coins to their collections.  These coins are initially valued by the amount of precious metals that they contain.  However, you might possibly run across bullion coins from historically significant or low mintage years.  If this happens, then you will find that your bullion coin values react just as circulated coins might – rare coins are worth more.

In addition to rare American gold and silver bullion coins, there is the possibility of collecting the gold and silver bullion coins that are minted in other countries.  Imagine the excitement of adding a South African Krugerrand, an Australian Kangaroo, an Austrian Philharmonic, or a Mexican Libertad to your collection of American gold and silver Eagles.  Moreover, the most exciting part is that your wealth is protected in your coin collection, because they will only continue to appreciate in value.
